Basic Level: [Maximum of 70 points for this section. Can move on with 65]
1. Read
a part in the play. (2 pts/day)
2. Draw
a comic strip that depicts one of your favorite scenes of the play. (up to
10 pts)
3. Create
flashcards for fifteen of the most difficult vocabulary words in the play (I’ll
ask you ten words, one point each)
4. With
a partner, act a 2-3 page scene from the text.
Paraphrase the text, use props and costumes and perform your scene for
the class without reading from a script (up to 20 pts)
5. Complete
the check for understanding and critical thinking questions following each act
in complete sentences (up to 10 pts/act)
6. Create
a crossword puzzle using fifteen of the most difficult vocabulary words in the
play (10 pts)
7. Choose
and complete one or two of The Crucible activity sheets (up to 5
pts/each)
8. Create
a wanted poster for one of the accused witches.
Make sure to include specific information from the text. (up to 10
pts)
9. Create
a mobile of characters in the play based on their social positions. Include physical descriptions and character
traits, or show these with sketches. (up to 20 points)
10. Write a
series of five journal entries from the point of view of John Proctor,
Elizabeth Proctor or Abigail Williams.
Each entry (handwritten) should be approximately 1 page in length and
should reflect your character’s feelings on an important event or series of
events in the play. (up to 20 points)
11. After
reading Acts I and II, complete a Cause and Effect Organizer. On a blank sheet of paper, create three
columns. Label the columns: Cause of, Event, Effect of. Record 10 events with their respective causes
and effects. You may repeat this for
Acts III and IV if you wish to do so. (up
to 20 pts/organizer)
12. Memorize a
10-line monologue and perfom it for the class. (up to 10 pts)
13. Pretend
you are a lawyer representing either one of the accused or the
prosecution. Prepare an argument and a
rebuttal for your case. Your argument
and rebuttal should each be approximately one page long. (up to 10 pts)
14. Write and
perform a song/rap about a character or situation in the play (10 pts)
15. Create a
review game for one act of the play that the class can play (15 pts)
Explorer Level: [Choose one only- 20 pts maximum]
- Propose an alternative ending to the play. Your ending must be two-three pages long and written in the form of a drama.
- Write a letter from Elizabeth Proctor to her condemned husband John. The letter should detail her grievances, any blame she might feel or it may express her beliefs and/or her regrets. The language and style of the letter should reflect the way Elizabeth speaks throughout the play. On another sheet of paper, write a response from John that expresses how he may feel toward Elizabeth now and his beliefs and/or regrets. Prepare a final draft of each letter on plain white paper.
- Create a newspaper that would have been in circulation during the time of the play. Include the following:
- A title d. An obituary section
- Two current events articles e. A visual essay (comic strip, cartoon, etc.)
- A weather report f. An editorial (opinion article)
Superstar Level: [Choose one only- 10 pts maximum]
- Opinion on Witches. What do people believe about witches today? Get a superstar level worksheet. Go to the library or use the Internet and find three sources as current as possible on the topic. Summarize the main points of each article on the worksheet. On notebook paper or using a computer, draft your opinion on the issue, citing some of your research. Your opinion should be approximately 200 words or more (two good paragraphs). Proofread, edit, and type your final opinion. - Historical Poster Report. How did the political events of the 1950s influence the writing of The Crucible? Research the fear of Communism in the 1950s, and use the information you gather to make a poster report. Turn in superstar level worksheet ____ and Works Cited ____
