Choose ONE of the following prompts:
1982 Open Question:
In great literature, no scene of violence exists for its own sake.
Invisible Man confronts the reader with scenes of violence.
In a well-organized essay, explain how the scene or scenes contribute
to the meaning of the complete work.
OR
1987 Open Question:
Some novels and plays seem to advocate changes in social and
political attitudes or in traditions. Briefly note the particular
attitudes or traditions that Ralph Ellison apparently wishes to modify.
Then analyze the techniques the author uses to influence the reader’s
views. Avoid plot summary.
