Poetry Poster Project

Poetry Poster Project

Objective: To explore, analyze, and review the poems in our poetry unit.
Materials needed:
-World Literature textbook (“Laura”, “Invitation to a Voyage”, “The Bridegroom”)
-Class notes
-Poems given to you during the poetry unit (“Sonnet 3”, Haiku by Basho, “Tonight I Can Write”, and “And We Shall Be Steeped”)
-One piece of poster board
-Markers and pens to write on your poster
-Your brain and imagination!
Your group members: write the names of the group members and their roles below.
Literary Termer: ______________________
Biographer: __________________________
Interpreter: __________________________
Steps:
  1. Each group will be assigned a poem that we’ve studied during the poetry unit.  The title of your poem in quotation marks should be written in the top center of your poster with the poet’s name written below it.
  2. Literary Termer: This student will identify ten literary terms and examples of each from the poem.  First, the student will list the mood, tone, and style (lyric, sonnet, haiku, or narrative) of the poem.  Next, the literary termer will list the sound devices (alliteration, assonance, consonance, rhyme, rhyme scheme, internal rhyme, rhythm, and onomatopoeia) and examples of each device found on the poster.  Then, the termer will list the types and examples of figurative language (symbol, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, allusion, personification)  included in the poem on the poster.  Finally, the termer will identify on the poster any other literary terms (imagery, stanza, octave, sestet, or refrain) and examples that are included in the assigned poem.
  3. Interpreter:  In paragraph form, this student will answer the first three objective questions.
-What does the poem do (describe or tell a story)?
-Who is the speaker?
-What is the poem about?
The paragraph should be 5-7 complete sentences in length that identifies the poem’s purpose (to describe or tell a story), the speaker and provides a complete analysis of the poem’s meaning. Finally, the paragraph will be cut out and glued or taped to the poster.
  1. Biographer: This student will write a paragraph (5-7 complete sentences) that gives at least 5 biographical facts about the poet.  The paragraph must include the poet’s name, poem we read, date of birth and death (if applicable), country of origin, and themes of his or her work.  One sentence in the paragraph should explain the connection between one element of the poem we read and the poet’s life.  The World Literature textbook (purple) and the World Literature textbook (brown) may used to gather facts about the poets. Also, students may use the internet in the classroom to gather information about the various poets we’ve covered during the unit. This paragraph will be cut out and taped or glued to your poster.
  2. Your group will leave your poster on a desk in your designated area.  Then, all groups will walk around the classroom to each poster and record the information necessary to study for the poetry unit test.

Evaluation:
Your grade will be based on:
·         Literary termer’s correct use of ten literary terms and examples.
·         Biographer’s complete paragraph including all the required biographical information about the poet.
·         Interpreter’s complete paragraph identifying the poem’s purpose, the speaker, and a full explanation of the poem’s meaning.
