And We Shall Be Steeped

“And We Shall Be Steeped…..”
Now you will write a lyric poem that embraces and cherishes your heritage.
I.                   What is your heritage? How do you identify yourself?
Examples:
Ø  Hometown (Roanoke Rapids, Littleton, Enfield, Hollister)
Ø  Race (African-American, Native American, European-American)
Ø  Nationality (American)

II.                Brainstorm about a person, place, achievement, and cultural aspect that symbolize your heritage.
Examples:
Ø  Person: a family member’s name, a friend’s name, or a famous person who represents your heritage.
Ø  Place: a place where you and your friends go in your town, or a place where many people of your heritage live.
Ø  Achievement: an accomplishment or contribution that someone from your heritage has made.
Ø  Cultural aspect: the name of a singer or rap artist your friends and you listen to frequently, or a famous singer or rap artist from a similar heritage.

III. Write a lyric poem that includes an allusion (a reference to a well-known person, place, idea, literary, or artistic work which is always capitalized) to a person, place, achievement, and cultural aspect that represents you.  Begin and end with the words, “And we shall be steeped in _____________”
Below is a sample outline for claiming a town as one’s heritage.  Be creative and express yourself!

And we shall be steeped in  ______________ (name of a town),
Where we like to go to _________________ (a well-known place)
It’s always _____________, ______________, _____________ (names of friends or family members) and we listen to __________________  (name of a rap artist or singer) as we ride together.
And we shall be steeped in the presence of  _______________ (name of a person from your heritage who has accomplished or contributed to the community or the world) who ________________ (accomplishment or contribution).
And we shall be steeped in ____________________.
